Damon Hill has rejoined the Atlassian Williams F1 Team as an Official Ambassador, returning to the team with which he won his one and only F1 world title on the 30 year anniversary of their winning the 1996 Formula 1 World Championship together.
Hill’s journey with Williams began in the early 1990s when he was recruited as test driver for two seasons as the team went from occasional Grand Prix winners in 1989 and 1990 to world beaters in 1991 and 1992, earning a full race seat in 1993 when Nigel Mansell left to join Indycar, scoring his first Grand Prix victory in Hungary later that year. In the years that followed, he played a central role in one of Williams’ most competitive eras, helping the team secure the Constructors’ title in 1994 and narrowly missing out on the Drivers’ crown in a dramatic final-race showdown.
The pinnacle of his career came in 1996 when Hill and teammate Jacques Villeneuve dominated the season with Hill’s eight wins narrowly clinching the World Championship as he became the first son of a former world champion to win the title himself. His success wasn’t measured in stats alone as he became a household name in the UK and further afield, twice earning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in the process.
Now 30 years on, Hill’s ambassadorial role sees him return not just as a celebrated figure from the past, but as a fundamental part of Williams’ story moving forward. He will join a strong ambassadorial lineup that includes former teammate and 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve, alongside three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick.
For Williams, Hill’s appointment signals a continued embrace of its rich near half-century heritage while also championing its future, celebrating the team’s legacy and helping its evolution into the new era of F1. Welcome back Damon!
