Technical Director 2001-2011

Sam Michael

Australian Sam Michael studied mechanical engineering at the University of New South Wales where he split his time studying and working on Formula Holden - an Australian open wheel racing category. He left Australia to join Formula 1 team Lotus in the UK in 1993, shortly before they went bankrupt.

On leaving Lotus he joined Gary Anderson at Jordan Grand Prix with a view to establishing their R&D department.

After two years working in the Jordan factory, Michael joined their test team and subsequently became race engineer for Ralf Schumacher and then Heinz-Harald Frentzen (both former Williams drivers).

In 2001 Sir Frank Williams recruited Michael as Senior Operations Engineer, managing teams of engineers on location at races and in testing.

In 2004, Patrick Head’s desire to concentrate on Williams’ engineering strategy allowed Michael to step up to Technical Director, where he remained before leaving Williams in 2011 to join McLaren’s senior technical management team.

Michael returned to Australia after resigning from McLaren in 2014 where he joined the board of the Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety, promoting safety in motorsport.
