Alex Albon is a Thai-British Formula One driver who joined Williams in 2022.
Born on 23 March 1996 in London, England, Albon races under the Thai flag and is one of the most prominent drivers to represent Thailand in Formula One.
Albon began karting at a young age and quickly established himself as a competitive talent. He progressed through the junior single-seater ranks, competing in Formula Renault, GP3, and later Formula 2. In the 2018 Formula 2 Championship, he finished third overall, earning recognition for his consistency, racecraft, and technical feedback.
Albon made his Formula One debut in 2019 with a last minute call up to Toro Rosso after initially announcing he’d spend the season in FormulaE with eDams. Then, when the the inevitable happened and halfway through the season Red Bull demoted their #2 driver Pierre Gasly, Albon – who, six month earlier had been without a seat in F1 – was promoted to Red Bull Racing to partner Max Verstappen.
During his time at Red Bull, Albon achieved two podium finishes and contributed to the team’s Constructors’ Championship efforts, though he faced challenges adapting to the car.
After stepping away from a full-time race seat in 2021, Albon remained in Formula 1 as Red Bull’s reserve driver while also competing in the DTM championship. In 2022, he returned to the grid with Williams Racing, where he became a key figure in the team’s rebuilding phase. His performances at Williams have been widely praised, particularly for his ability to extract strong results from a developing car and manage tyres effectively during races.
Known for his calm demeanor and strong work ethic, Albon is valued for his detailed technical input and adaptability. He continues to play an important role in Williams’ long-term development, aiming to help return the team to competitive prominence while establishing himself as a consistent and reliable Formula One driver.
Off the track, Alex is known for being unfailingly nice, humble and gentlemanly – part of the new breed of F1 drivers proving that you don’t need to be a complete b*stard to be successful.
